Windows of any stripe is bullocks

In my family we use only Macs and Linux.

Our home computers consist of:

Mac Mini (family)
MacBook (Sean)
Thinkpad T60 w/ Fedora 8 (Sean)
MacBook Pro (Nina)

My parents use Macs. My brother and his wife use Macs. My sister is the last hold out. In her job she uses a Dell laptop running XP. She called me desperate for me to fix it and remove the viruses. Can you tell I am a Linux hacker and Mac user? So out of love, I am repairing her WinXP laptop.

Update: It now blue screens after installing Microsoft’s own OneCare ™ program in which it attempted to clean the WinXP software of several trojans. So it now won’t boot up. Effing brilliant.

Home Finance Software

Saturday, September 15, 2007

In the past I have used Liquid Ledger, iBank, and Quicken. I am always looking for the right mix of ease of use and sufficient depth. So I was pleased to read an interview with the creator of a new Mac finance application called Money Well. One of the things I like about it is the fact it uses Envelope Accounting. I will give it a try and see how it goes.

iWork ‘08

Saturday, September 1, 2007

Tá mise iontach sásta le hiWork ‘08.  Bainím úsaid as ag an oifig agus sa bhaile.  Measaím go dtiocfadh liom úsaid a stad le Mac Office 2004 anois.

New laptop

Saturday, August 25, 2007

At work I do Linux development, but grew weary of trying to get Linux to work on a laptop. I definitely did not want a Dell Windows laptop. Fortunately, Macs are supported at my company. So I ordered one of these beauties. With it I can do Linux development remotely or through vmware. Quite frankly, I spend more time managing than actually developing. But when I do have time to code, this is an excellent platform for it.

iWork ‘08

Chaith mé amach Mac Office inné agus cheannaigh mé iWork in áit.  An fáth? Bheul, rinne Apple ríomhclár nua atá cosúil le Excel ach ag an am gcéanna níos simplí. Chuir mé iWork isteach sna MacBook agus MacBook Pro s’againne. tChífidh muid dá mbeádh fadhbanna againne agus muid ag iarraidh comhad de chuid MS Office a foscail.Seán

BookIt!

Monday, February 5, 2007

I came across this handy application to sync my Safari bookmarks with my Firefox bookmarks. On a Mac I really prefer to use Safari because it is faster and better integrated than Firefox. However, for my Linux workstation at work and various Linux laptops I use Firefox. With firefox I also leverage the Google Browser Sync. That enables me to sync my bookmarks across all firefox installations via a particular GMail account. Now the missing link is BookIt. This $12 piece of software will merge your Safari bookmarks with your Google sync’d Firefox bookmarks. Now,whether I am at home or at work, on a Mac or Linux workstation, my bookmarks are in sync. Pretty cool, eh?

The Mac seems to lack any built-in Paint program. I wanted to get one that is simple enough to sue for the whole family. Any ideas?

Our iBook Linux Server

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

Recently, I bought Nina a new Mac Book Pro to replace her old 2001 iBook. The G3 iBook has found a new role as our mail and web server. It actually works out quite nicely. It is running Ubuntu Linux-Server.

I moved the server to an iBook G3 Dual USB running Ubuntu-Server Dapper.  Talk about a reduction in size.
